Taonga puoro - customary musical instrument making - Auckland Rōpū Whakahaere

Join us for a special wānanga exploring taonga puoro, traditional Māori musical instruments, with Tāmaki Oro Rau, an Auckland-based taonga pūoro collective. Through hands-on learning, you’ll discover the ancestral sounds of puoro, their connection to storytelling and te taiao, and create and play your own instruments while learning the tikanga behind them.

Explore taonga puoro rhythms, resonance, and meaning, and discover how sound can nurture balance, wellbeing, and healing for yourself, your colleagues, and your ākonga. Connect with colleagues new to the profession just like yourself, and kōrero about your shared aspirations for change in education - in a safe and supported space.

This wānanga is open to students and new educators who are members of the Auckland Rōpū Whakahaere. Non-members of NZEI Te Riu Roa are welcome for a $30 cash contribution payable on the day. Spaces are limited, with priority given to union members.

Become a member today and join a whānau committed to a better, fairer education system.
