Kārena Ngata

Kārena (Ngāti Porou) is a secondary school teacher and tertiary lecturer specialising in Te Tiriti o Waitangi in education. 

With a Masters in Contemporary Education and a degree in Māori and Pacific Development, Kārena works to advance equitable educational outcomes for rangatahi Māori in settler colonial education.

"Once educators have developed their understanding around the enduring relevance of He Whakaputanga and Te Tiriti, they are often ready to explore how Culturally Sustaining and Relational Pedagogy can deliver on the aspiration of a “Just Education” for all. "

Jasmine Taankink
Jasmine (Ngā Mahanga-a-Tairi) is a unionist, mother and grandmother who lives in Waitangirua, the community that raised her. She is a second language speaker of te reo Māori, committed to the intergenerational transmission of te reo in her whānau and community.

I have worked in education for 37 years as a kaiako, a Resource Teacher of Māori, a Tumuaki of a Kura Kaupapa and currently as a PLD facilitator. 
 
"The Education and Training Act 2020 states that as a partner to Te Tiriti o Waitangi, the Crown has a duty to actively promote and protect Tiriti rights. If we achieve this then we will have a globally recognised education system that has indigenous rights and mokopuna futures at its centre."
